What to do When You Find Spring Fledglings

Around this time of the year when baby birds start to fledge the nest, fledglings will often end up on the ground. The best thing to do is just leave them alone as they are usually uninjured and the parents are likely still in the area to take care of them. We got called out today about an injured Red-shouldered Hawk on the ground but it turned out to be a young Hawk that was still honing its flying skills and was on the ground for a while. One way you can help these birds when they are on the ground is to keep pets away from them if at all possible. Both dogs and cats can cause significant damage to the birds if they get ahold of them. When in doubt, (if you are in Douglas County, Oregon) please don't hesitate to call the Forever Wild Wildlife Rescue hotline at (541) 459-4023 with any questions you may have. If you are able to get a photo of the bird to share with us, that can be helpful as well.
