What to do When You Find a Young Green Heron on the Ground
Mother Green Herons often nest in the trees in downtown Roseburg. When young birds are learning to fly, they end up on the ground for a few days. This is natural, mother birds usually feed their grounded babies. However, with traffic and human presence, the mother Green Herons downtown may be too afraid of human presence to approach their young to feed them. So what should you do if you find a grounded baby green heron? 1. If found away from people and traffic, do nothing. The mother will care for it. 2. If close to traffic and people, gently place the baby bird in a box and DO NOT feed it. If you are in Douglas County (Oregon) call Forever Wild Wildlife Rescue’s hotline at 541-459-4023 so that we can place it in the care of a licensed wildlife rehabber.
