The ups and downs of winter

Our Little Brown Bat is still feeling a bit sluggish. They don't hunt and digest well until night temps are 50 and above, so he comes in and out of torpor. It wont be very long before he is able to be released, as there is increasing insect activity out there. When bats are awakened from hibernation in winter and warmed up, they can burn up to a third of their stored calories. If that happens long before the nights are warm enough, they can starve. Because metabolism depends on it, temperatures are manipulated in rehabilitating them during cold months. This boy's weight is monitored every day, and if it drops very much, he is warmed up and fed and stays in a warmed basket until the weight is back up, then he is allowed to go back into torpor. Bats are very shy and easily stressed, so I'm certain he will be glad when he is away from people!
