The best kind of release

These 3 Scrub Jays came in as nestlings. The property's trees were cut down and because of chainsaw work the parents didn't come back. Jays learn quite a bit of their life skills from parents, so when a rehabber raises them, it's best to find a release location where food and water are plentiful so the learning curve isn't so tough. We drove by the property they came from, but no jays were to be seen anywhere. About 1/2 mile away we found a field with lots of blackberries and the river behind it. Before we even opened the crate, an adult jay few into a nearby tree and began calling. The babies answered from the crate, and the calls changed to the soft sounds the siblings make to each other in the nest. The first fledgling flew right to the adult, the second flew into a nearby tree and began begging for food from the adult, and the third spread his wings and called. We aren't sure whether the adult was a parent, but it was obviously kin. So good to know these 3 will have family around to finish teaching them how to be a jay!
