Resisting the Urge...
Its hard not to feel bad for wildlife after a long winter. But its dangerous for any wild mammal to feed them. Many wild animals have slower metabolisms in winter due to less abundant food, and are not used to high daily caloric intake, or calorie rich foods. Ungulates, for instance, switch from green leafier spring and summer vegetation to tough woodier browse this time of year. When mammal diets change seasonally to fit what is available, their digestive systems change along with the diet. Abrupt changes in food can cause digestive problems and even infection. In addition, feeding them encourages them to think less about their foraging and survival skills and more about finding a human to feed them. So please resist the urge to leave cat food out for foxes and raccoons, or grain our for deer and squirrels. If you see a wild animal that appears to be starving, give Forever Wild Wildlife Rescue a call at 541-459-4023. The animal may be ill and may need more than food to help it.
