Rescuing baby birds
Baby bird calls are already coming in. This cold weather is hard on nesting babies. Cold baby birds don't survive well. So if you do find a baby bird on the ground, please call us as quickly as possible, and if you can, take a picture of the baby so our rehabbers can tell how old it is. Cat or dog-caught, or injured babies will always need a rehabber. Fledgling birds, those fully feathered that can perch and are learning to fly, often spend at least a few days on the ground as they learn, with parents feeding them there. Unless they are injured, it is best to jut put them up in a high bush or a low tree branch for mom to raise. Nestling birds, those not fully feathered, will not survive on the ground, but occasionally can be re-nested in a man-made nest, depending on their age feathering, and the weather. It's always best for mom to raise these little ones, but there are times this isn't possible. Give us a call at 541-459-4023 if you do find a bird on the ground and we can help you determine whether it is ok to leave there, or whether it needs to come in.
