Hungry birds

This time of year people worry about our native birds because of the colder weather. However, the humidity out there can quickly cause mold to grow on birdseed, which can kill them with fungal diseases like Aspergillosis. There is also a risk with bird feeders, because Salmonella and other avian diseases can be spread through the close contact made at feeding stations. Feeders can also alter migration habits, discourage foraging behaviors, and help bolder non-natives out-compete native species. They can also enable predators, like hawks and cats, to hunt songbirds more easily. Its hard to see any animal hungry, and kind hearts always want to help, but we all need to be very alert for those times when help becomes harm. It can be a difficult call to make. There are many organizations who have posted good information about how to make sure that your bird feeders are not doing harm.
