Fragile Baby Gray
We aren’t holding out a lot of hope for this baby Gray Squirrel. She came in late last night. Some people had found her many days ago next to a dead sibling. They tried to raise her, but she wasn’t eating. It appears she has a probable fracture to the lower jaw and face that make it painful for her to suckle. She is seriously dehydrated, very thin, and snorting out old curdled milk from her lungs. The only way she can swallow is by a tiny dropper slipped back into her mouth, and fed very slowly. She is having fluids and electrolytes injected regularly to try to re-hydrate her, and is on antibiotics. If we can keep her alive we’ll get her to our vet on Monday to see if the jaw will work correctly. Because they grow continuously, if squirrel teeth don’t line up correctly, they won’t wear down and overgrowth the wrong direction can be fatal to the squirrel. We so appreciate people who try to help these helpless ones, but they are much trickier than raising puppies and kittens, and they can go downhill fast. Please, if you or anyone you know finds orphaned wildlife, call us quickly, it can make all the difference between life and death for these babies.
