Barn Owls
From Meriann Shepherd: Marc Shepherd finished up building this new nest box for the four baby barn owls this weekend and the first night it went into their flight pen they abandoned their old box and moved right in to their fancy new custom home. They are hunting live food for themselves exclusively now and food sources in the wild are at their most plentiful, so it’s time for them to go home to their wild world. We will transport them in this box by covering up the hole during the afternoon while they’re snoozing and driving them out to their new barn on a cattle ranch where they will never be exposed to poison bait boxes again. Baby barn owls typically have about a 75% mortality rate in the first year of life, largely because they leave their nest before they can fly, don’t know how to hunt and become part of the food chain. I believe we have given these babies the very best odds possible at success 🦉 🦉 🦉 🦉
